Kahungunu Taikura Pounamu featured over 20 portraits of Kahungunu tipuna photographed by Samuel Carnell between 1870 to 1900. This was produced and curated by Ngatai Huata and mounted in Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga and Hastings Art Centre in February and March. Both events attracted 2,000 visitors with Hastings Art Centre staff sharing that the exhibition was hugely popular and attracted lots of visitors and positive comments. The exhibition opened Saturday 4 February with a dawn ceremony led by Haami Hilton and excerpts from “Aku Tipuna” production by Kahurangi Dance Theatre. Speakers included Ngahiwi Tomoana, Ra Smith, Robert MacDonald, Jerry Hapuku and Tame Wairere Iti. 100 people attended the opening and lecture series.
